While fans of the Washington Football Team were hoping the squad would go by the Warriors moving forward, team president Jason Wright made it clear that won’t be happening.
What’s next for the Washington Football Team regarding its name change? That’s what everyone is waiting to find out. Since removing the old name prior to last season and adopting the “Football Team” name, the franchise will adopt a new name and logo in 2022.
One of the names that Washington fans were hoping would get the green light was Warriors. However, team president Jason Wright has said that after plenty of research and discussion, the organization has decided to move in another direction.
The new Washington Football Team name will not be Warriors
“Feedback from across communities we engaged clearly revealed deep-seated discomfort around Warriors, with the clear acknowledgment that it too closely aligns with Native American themes,” Wright said in a WFT statement.
“Such an embrace of potentially Native-adjacent iconography and imagery would not represent a clear departure that many communities have so forcefully advocated for us to embrace, and that frankly, we set out to do when we started this process a year ago.”
As you can tell, Wright is extremely passionate about this subject and he wants to make sure Washington is doing everything possible to make sure all the steps are being taken this time around. Wright’s piece on the team site was titled ‘Moving Forward,’ as he and the rest of the front office are going above and beyond to try and learn more about Native American culture.
Washington Red Tails may be the team’s new name in 2022
With the new name that the team will eventually adopt, the last thing Wright or Washington as a whole wants is to offend anyone. As he stated, while Warriors may not seem like it’s overly offensive, there’s a slippery slope there that the team doesn’t want to go down. We could find out what the new name is soon, but it won’t be Warriors.
With one possibility nixed, the Washington Red Tails has garnered a lot of support as a potential new name for the Washington Football Team.
